I. Salman Rushdie , Indian born British – American writer and presently US citizen was stabbed by Hadi Matar born in US to Lebanese parents on 13th August 2022.His condition is critical. The author of “ The Satanic Verses” which sparked fury among some muslims who believed it was blasphemous, saw a character as an insult to the Prophet Muhammad , among other objections. The book was banned in Iran where the leader late Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa or edict calling for killing of Rushdie and reward of more than US $ 3 million to anyone who killed him.

II. The then Rajiv Gandhi govt. banned his book in 1988

Rushdie 75 was propelled into the spotlight with his novel “ midnight’s children” in 1981 which won International praise and Britain’s prestigious eBooker Prize for its portrayal of post – Independence India.

Union Govt. last year announced that August 14 will be observed as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas or Partition Horrors remembrance day every year. Prime Minister Narender Modi said that this day will be remembered in memory of those who lost their lives during Partition .The pain of partition of the country can never be forgotten . Because of hatred and violence , lakhs of our sisters and brothers were displaced and even lost their lives . In memory of the struggle and sacrifice of those people , it was decided to celebrate 14th August as “ Vibhishika Memorial Day”. This day will not only inspire us to eliminate the poison of discrimination , animosity and ill- will , but it will also strengthen unity, social harmony and human sensibilities. On August 14 , 1947, India and Pakistan were partitioned . Pakistan celebrates August 14 as its Independence Day and we celebrate it on 15th Aug every year.

75 years of our Independence is going to be completed on 15th Aug 2022 . Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for “ Har Ghar Tiranga ” campaign under the aegis of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav to encourage people to bring the Tiranga home & hoist it to mark the 75th year of India’s Independence . This will be an embodiment to our commitment to nation building and will invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people and to promote awareness about our national flag.
