India wins Women’s ODI World Cup 2025

● On November 2, 2025 India’s women’s cricket team clinched their first ever ICC Women’s ODI World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.

Boost for Women’s Cricket: The win came with record prize money of ₹37.3 crore, a 239% increase from the previous tournament, enhancing visibility and growth for women’s cricket globally and in India. This triumph underscores the team’s resilience and marks a milestone in promoting gender equality in sports.

Shafali Verma was the Player of the Match in the final of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The Player of the Tournament for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 was Deepti Sharma from India.

India became the fourth team to win the Women’s World Cup (under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur) after Australia, England and New Zealand. India had previously reached the finals in the year 2005 and 2017.

● It was jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, expanding opportunities and audience reach for women’s cricket in South Asia.

● The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a cash reward of ₹ 51 crore for the Indian women’s team after their win. This win enhanced India’s image as a leading global host of major sports events.

About Women’s ODI World Cup

● The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup is a quadrennial One Day International (ODI) championship organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It was first held in 1973 in England two years before the first Men’s World Cup (1975).

● England won the first edition of the Women’s ODI World Cup in 1973. Australia was the runner up in the Women’s ODI World Cup in 1973. Australia has won the Women’s ODI World Cup the most times with 7 titles.

● Initially it was organised by the International Women’s Cricket Council (till 2005).

● It is the oldest world championship in women’s sport after the Women’s Hockey World Cup.
