Merger of Two Union Territory The Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Bill, 2019

These two Union Territories were merged into one union territory with the new name – Union Territory of Dadar & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu w.e.f - 26 Jan 2020 . The necessary legislation was passed by Parliament in December 2019 and came into effect on 26 January 2020.

In July 2019, Union Government proposed merging of two UT’s into a single UT. Legislation to this effect - Union Territory of Dadar & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu Bill 2019 was introduced on 26 November 2019 in Lok Sabha by – Union Home Minister Amit Shah and passed on 27 November 2019 and later passed in Rajya Sabha on 03 December 2019. The bill got the accent of President on 9th December 2019 and became The Dadar & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (Merger of UT’s) Act 2019.

REASONS OF MERGER: The two UT ’s were merged to reduce duplication of services and reduce cost of administration , Strengthening efficiency and fast track the development of the two Union Territories .
