14th August - Partition Horrors Remembrance Day (Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas)
Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, also known as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, is observed every year on 14 August to remember the victims and survivors of the Partition of India in 1947. The day honours those who lost their lives, homes, families and livelihoods and those who were forcibly displaced during the Partition. It aims to preserve the memories of the suffering and violence experienced by millions and to ensure that future generations understand the human cost of Partition.
Declaration and Significance -
The Modi Government declared to observe 14 August every year as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in 2021. Pakistan celebrates its independence day on 14 August, one day before India’s independence on 15 August. The observance seeks to remind people that India’s independence was accompanied by one of the most tragic episodes of mass displacement and communal violence in modern history.
Partition of India, 1947 -
The Partition of British India in August 1947 resulted in the creation of the Union of India and Dominion of Pakistan. It was implemented on the basis of the Mountbatten Plan and given legal effect through the Indian Independence Act, 1947. The boundaries between India and Pakistan were drawn by the Radcliffe Commission, headed by Sir Cyril Radcliffe. The provinces of Punjab and Bengal were divided, resulting in large-scale movement of people across the newly created borders.
Humanitarian Impact -
Partition triggered one of the largest mass migrations in history, displacing around 10-15 million people. Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs crossed the newly created borders amid communal riots, killings, looting, arson, abductions and family separations.
Purpose of the Observance -
Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas honours the victims and survivors of Partition and preserves their memories. It aims to educate future generations about the consequences of communal hatred and violence while promoting peace, unity, social harmony and national integration.
