Will acquire presidency of BRICS + Organisation on 1st January 2026
● India will acquire the presidency of BRICS+ organisation on 1st january 2026 from Brazil. The tenure of this presidency will remain with India till 31st December 202G.
● The 18th Summit of BRICS+ organisation will be held in India around August or September 2026, likely in New Delhi.
India’s Strategic Priorities as President
● India’s presidency is expected to prioritise the interests of the Global South while remaining responsive to broader shifts in world affairs.
● Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized that India’s leadership will focus on delivering concrete outcomes for emerging economies, demonstrating that BRICS can unite countries facing common challenges despite diverging national interests.
● India’s agenda may include the creation of an investment guarantee mechanism to address issues such as climate change, poverty, energy transition and infrastructure development. This initiative would operate through the New Development Bank (NDB) and allow developing nations to access financial support without relying on Western controlled institutions like IMF, World Bank etc.
● India also plans to replicate the approach of its 2023 G20 leadership taking multilateral meetings across numerous Indian cities. This model not only promotes India’s global role but also familiarizes its citizens with the country’s expanding international influence.
● In July 2025, Prime Minister Modi proposed reimagining BRICS as an acronym for Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability, reflecting India’s vision to strengthen the bloc as a platform for cooperation and sustainable development.
● BRICS+ has been emerging as one of the most powerful world organisation. India has been constantly demanding reforms in UN system.
