Schedules in Our Constitution

Our Constitution originally had 8 schedules but now we have 12 schedules in our Constitution. These schedules are as:

I. This schedule list names of Indian States and Union Territories (Presently we have 28 States and 8 Union Territories).

II. This schedule have salaries of officials holding Public Offices, of Judges and CAG as:

III. This list the oath of offices for elected officials and Judges.

IV. Allocation of seats in Upper House (Rajya Sabha/Council of States) Uttar Pradesh (31), (minimum one from each state), Delhi (3), J & K (4) & Puducherry (1) etc.

V. The provides for the Administration and Control of scheduled areas and Scheduled Tribes (areas and tribes needing special protection due to disadvantageous conditions).

VI. Provision made for administration of tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram.

VII. Three lists under division of powers i.e. Union List, State List and concurrent List (Article 246).

VIII. List of official Indian Languages– (English is not included). Originally 14 Indian Languages were in the schedule. Presently this schedule has 22 Indian Languages. By 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act 2004, four Indian Languages were included in this list— Bodo, Dogri, Santhali, Maithili.

IX. Validation of certain acts and regulations made through 1st Constitutional Amendment Act 1951. These acts and regulations were placed under 9th Schedule. These acts and regulations were awarded judicial immunity i.e. their validity cannot be challenged in any court of law, but present position is that acts and regulations placed under 9th schedule can also be judicially challenged.

X. Anti-defection law made my 52nd Constitutional Amendment Act 1985.

XI. Panchayati Raj (Rural Local Government) awarded constitutional status by 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act 1992 came into force on 24-04-1993, placed under this schedule.

XII. Municipalities (Urban Local Government) awarded constitutional status by 74th Constitutional Amendment Act 1992 came into force on 01-06-1993, placed under this schedule.
