Polity Notes
Be Vigilant, Be Responsible, Participate in Special Intensive Revision (SIR)
Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is a special verification of electoral rolls conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that only eligible citizens are registered as voters. Unlike the routine Summary Revision, SIR involves a detailed verification of voters. It is conducted under Article 324 of the Constitution and Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
Need for SIR: Rapid urbanisation, migration, registration of new voters, non-reporting of deaths, and removal of ineligible names make periodic intensive revision necessary to maintain accurate and credible electoral rolls.
The SIR, originally scheduled to end on 25 July, has been extended till 8 August. As responsible citizens, we should cooperate with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) by providing correct information and the required documents.
Do not panic or believe rumours. An incorrect entry or delayed submission of documents does not automatically lead to cancellation of citizenship. Errors can be corrected through the prescribed process.
Participate before 8 August, verify your voter details, cooperate with BLOs, report errors promptly, and rely only on official information from the Election Commission.
