The Farm Laws Repeal Bill 2021

PM Modi on 19th November 2021, announced to repeal the three contentious agriculture laws that were enacted on Sep 27th, 2020 and appealed to farmers to call off their agitation & return to their fields & homes. He also announced that a committee will be formed to look into all aspects of agriculture.

The farmers feared the laws will lead to abolition of minimum support Price guaranteed by the govt on select crops & leave then at the mercy of big corporations.

PM said that three laws will be repealed in winter session of Parliament starting later this month.

The three laws were in favour of farmers but govt could not convince a section of them despite the best efforts of union govt. These laws were enacted to empower farmers, especially the small farmers. Farmer’s leader Rakesh Tikait has said that the protest will not be withdrawn till the three laws are actually repealed by the Parliament and government make a law to guarantee that the provision of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for select crops will continue.

As per the announcement of PM, Union Agriculture minister Shri Narandra Tomar introduced The Farm Laws Repeal Bill 2021 in Lok Sabha on 29th Nov 2021 (The very first day of start of winter session of Parliament). Both the houses have passed the bill and after getting the assent of the President, the three contentious Agriculture Laws stand repealed. However union government maintained that government is committed to the welfare of farmers and no step will remain untouched for their upliftment and necessary legislations in this regard shall be enacted in future.
