Uae to Leave Opec
The United Arab Emirates(UAE) is a federation of seven Arab Emirates- Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimal and Fujairah. The capital of the UAE is Abu Dhabi and its common currency is Derham. In practice the King of Abu Dhabi is elected as The President of UAE and the King of Dubai is elected as the Prime Minister of the UAE.
Why in news?
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced its withdrawal from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the broader OPEC+ alliance, effective 1st May 2026. This landmark decision marks a major shift in global energy geopolitics, threatening to weaken the historic oil cartel’s bargaining power.
What is OPEC?
It is a permanent intergovernmental organization created at the Baghdad Conference in 1960 by Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. The headquarter of OPEC is at Vienna, (Austria).
What is OPEC+?
Formed in 2016, as an alliance between OPEC and 10 other oil producers to address declining oil prices due to US shale oil growth.
● OPEC+ includes the OPEC members plus Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brunei, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Oman, Russia, South Sudan, and Sudan.
● OPEC+ produces roughly 40% of the world’s crude oil and accounts for about 60% of internationally traded petroleum.
Reasons for Exit
1. Production flexibility:
● UAE wants to increase oil output beyond OPEC quotas.
2. National interest & strategy:
● Focus on independent energy policy and long-term economic goals.
3. Tensions with Saudi Arabia:
● Disagreements over production quotas and regional politics.
4. Geopolitical factors:
● Impact of Iran conflict and shifting alliances (US–Israel proximity).
5. Investment in capacity expansion:
● UAE wants to utilize its increased oil production capacity
Impact on Global Oil Market
● Weakens OPEC’s control over global oil supply.
● May increase oil supply and will impact downward pressure on prices.
● Risk of price wars among producers (especially Saudi Arabia vs UAE).
● Adds volatility to already unstable oil markets due to geopolitical tensions.
Impact on India
● India may benefit from cheaper crude imports from the UAE.
● However, price volatility could affect fuel pricing and inflation.
