Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Elected Bangladesh’s 23rd President
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, aged 78, was elected as Bangladesh’s 23rd President. He secured 255 votes, defeating former army officer Oli Ahmad, who received 88 votes. Out of 349 eligible MPs, 343 participated in the election held at the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) under the supervision of Chief Election Commissioner ASM Nasir Uddin.
Significance of the Election: The election was notable as it was the first multi-candidate presidential election in Bangladesh in 35 years. Alamgir was nominated by the BNP and resigned as the party’s Secretary General and member of its National Standing Committee after being nominated.
Constitutional Provision: The President of Bangladesh is elected by Members of Parliament, unlike India, where the President is elected by an electoral college comprising elected MPs and MLAs. Under the Bangladesh Constitution, when the office of President falls vacant, a new President must be elected within 90 days.
Why Election Was Necessary: It became necessary after Mohammed Shahabuddin, elected unopposed in 2023, resigned before completing his five-year term on health grounds. The interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, and the subsequent return of the BNP to power.
